Teaching Artist: Paige Ahlenius

During this workshop, students will learn about and create their own Galimoto, a toy made by children of Africa. The toy that students create will be made from found objects. Students will be presented with a variety of objects and art supplies. Each student will be given a chance to select their items and design their toy. This workshop introduces different mediums and procedures that children can use to create their own toys. The session begins with a reading of Galimoto by Karen Lynn Williams after which students are tasked with using their imagination to create their own toy. This workshop is a great addition to any cultural arts initiative and broadens visual art exposure along the way. Students will gain a greater appreciation and knowledge of children in Africa. Students will also gain a broader sense of different cultures in relation to themselves and their own culture.
Requirements: Worktables for students, art room preferred. Artist needs 15 – 20 minutes to set up supplies for the workshop. If two or more workshops are scheduled, students need to come to the room where the artist is. Teachers must be present at all times during workshops.
